Thailand Travel Guide: Explore, Eat, and Experience Like a Local

THAILAND TRIP PLANNING

So you’re looking for the ultimate Thailand travel guide…Known as the land of smiles, Thailand has it all, from beautiful white beaches, incredibly diverse street food, stunning temples, and a very strong culture that is impossible to resist

Whether you’ve come to Thailand for an adventure or simply get cheap massages, I can guarantee you that once you finish this Thailand travel tips guide, you will want to pack up and go.

This country has easily become my favorite in Southeast Asia. As a result of spending quite some time there, I put together this Thailand travel guide of things to do and avoid during your travels.

Table of Contents

Quick Guide to Traveling in Thailand

Currency: Thai Baht

Electricity socket: This country has 230V and 50Hz electricity. Most places have a two-prong round or flat socket power outlet. Be sure to carry a universal travel adaptor, so that all your electronic devices can still be used.

Language: When traveling to Thailand, the language barrier is at an all-time high. Most English-speaking locals work in the hospitality industry, around the islands, etc… up north in small villages not so much. Expect to smile and node a lot.  Here are a few basic Thai phrases to help you out, while traveling.

Festivals and Celebrations:
When planning your trip to Thailand. Try to plan your trip in accordance with certain Thai festivals and celebrations such as the festival of lights (Loy Krathong) and the water festival (Songkran) as these are great opportunities to experience Thai culture and get some pretty sweet pictures/videos at the same time.

Thailand Safety Tips

All in all, Thailand is a very safe place, but then again, always be vigilant of your surroundings like anywhere as some locals will try to scam you. Just make sure to educate yourself on the various Thai Scams.

The #1 danger in Thailand, is motorbikes. There is over 5000 death per year, that’s about 14 per day. From personal experience, falling off a scooter is not fun. I never leave home without travel insurance.

There are 2 companies I recommend, Safetywing for the typical month-to-month traveler and World Nomads for the adventure traveler, as they also cover electronic devices.

NOTE: I strongly recommend that you also get an international driver’s license in advance if you are planning to drive a scooter while in Thailand.

Thailand Visa

Most countries are given a 60-day visa when entering Thailand by air and 15 days when entering by land. If you wish to stay longer than 60 days, you have 2 options, pay 1900 Baht at the immigration office or by doing a visa run to the border of Laos, Myanmar, or Cambodia.

If you wish to stay longer than 30-days, simply head over to your local Thai embassy (before departure) and apply for a Tourist Visa which will give you 60 days. Please note as well that more and more countries in Southeast Asia are demanding proof of departure, before allowing you to enter. So, make sure you come ready and have all the necessary arrangements booked in advance.

BEST TIME TO VISIT THAILAND

Thailand’s weather is pretty simple to break down into three seasons: the Rainy Season (May to October), the Cool Season (November to February), and the Hot Season (March to May). Whether you’re looking to dodge the rain, soak up the sun, or catch some cool breezes, there’s a perfect time for every type of adventure!

If you’re heading to Northern Thailand, steer clear of March and April—this is when the farmers burn their fields, turning the air into a smoky haze (aka “burning season”). Not the best time for clear views or fresh air! Instead, why not escape to the Thai islands during this period for some fresh sea breeze and killer views? Your lungs will thank you!

How To Get Around Thailand

Getting around Thailand is a breeze, but don’t wait until the last minute—shuttles and buses fill up fast! Trust me, booking in advance will save you a ton of stress. My go-to for transportation? 12Go and Bookaway. These sites have saved me so much time (and awkward lost-in-translation moments), making it ridiculously easy to get from point A to B.

Pro tip: If you’re traveling during peak season, lock in your tickets early so you’re not stuck scrambling last minute.

That said, if you’re looking for other ways to get around Thailand, here are some of my top recommendations: 👇

Speedboat, boat and Ferries in Thailand

When heading to the islands, you’ve got two main choices: speedboat or ferry. Wanna get there fast and bumpy? Go for the speedboat—it cuts travel time in half. Prefer a slow, cozy cruise where you can sit back and enjoy the views? The ferry’s your best bet. Totally up to you!

Then there are the iconic long-tail boats—perfect for island-hopping day trips. Grab a few friends and rent one for a private adventure. Prices usually range from 300–1,000 THB, depending on your group size. Split the cost, crank up the fun, and explore paradise!

Buses in Thailand

Buses—easily the cheapest way to travel around Thailand. Seriously, a bus ticket from Bangkok to Pattaya costs just 100 THB for a 2.5-hour ride. Wanna upgrade to a sleeper bus? That’ll run you around 250 THB—still insanely affordable!

If you’re zipping around Bangkok, the BTS Skytrain and MRT subway are your best friends. A ride costs 20–50 THB, depending on your stop, or you can grab a 1-day unlimited pass for 142 THB. Cheap, easy, and no sitting in traffic—win-win!

Trains in Thailand

If you’re up for a scenic (but slightly uncomfortable) ride, the train is an epic way to travel—and trust me, it’ll give you a great story to tell!

Feeling adventurous? Hop on the Bangkok to Chiang Mai train—a true backpacker experience—for just 200–300 THB. It’s not the fastest or comfiest option, but the views? Absolutely worth it.

As you can see, traveling Thailand is crazy affordable—so go make some memories!

Flying in Thailand

Where do I even start…? In all my travels, I’ve never seen flights this cheap. You can literally fly from Chiang Mai to Bangkok for just 500 THB ($14) or less. At that price, you gotta ask yourself—why even bother with the bus or train?

Flying to the islands? That’ll set you back 1,000–1,200 THB ($30–$35)—still a steal for skipping long travel hours.

Now, if you’re flying in or out, here are the main airports to know (Bangkok has two airports):

  • Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport
  • Bangkok Don Mueang Airport
  • Phuket International Airport
  • Chiang Mai International Airport
  • Krabi Airport

Private Transportation:

Car Rental – If you’re not comfortable driving on the left side of the road, don’t do it, Thailand is far too dangerous. But if you are, it’s going to cost your around 40$ per day (1000 THB)

Motorbike Taxis – Probably the funnest way to get around Thailand. Simply pull out your Grab app and look for the men in the green/orange vests.

Tuk-Tuks – These are fun the first few times, but don’t get fooled by the fun, they are not cheap! (they will always waste your time)

Songthaews – These are essential pick up converted into “buses” and usually cost 30-50 THB per ride.

Taxis – Avoid these and take GRAB’s instead, they are cheaper and more reliable.

Thailand Daily Travel Budget

Thailand is wild when it comes to affordability—it’s got two extremes: super cheap and crazy expensive. How much you spend all depends on how much luxury you want to soak in. But here’s the fun part—even if you go budget-friendly, the value you get for your money is insane.

From my own experience, you can live pretty damn well on $40–$60 per day, and that includes your hotel! That means you’ll still have plenty of cash left over for those legendary Thai massages—so go ahead, treat yourself!

Now, you can go even cheaper, but don’t go too cheap. You’re in Thailand to enjoy yourself, not to see how miserable you can be on a budget. Balance is key!

TOURS AROUND THAILAND

One of the best ways to discover the Thailand is by going on tours. Here’s a few tours I recommend.

What to Pack for Thailand

Thailand’s warm weather calls for smart packing, no matter where you’re headed. To help you make the most of your trip, here’s our tried-and-true packing guide for the Land of Smiles:

Clothing Must-Haves:

• Lightweight, quick-dry fabrics (trust us, you’ll need them in the humidity!)

• Modest cover-ups for temple visits (think scarves or sarongs)

• Breathable layers for air-conditioned buses and cooler northern spots

My Can’t-Leave-Home Without Gear:

1. Reliable Daypack – I’m a big fans of the Nomatic Daypack.

2. Comfy Footwear – From New Balance hiking shoes to sturdy Reef Sandals.

3. Reusable Water Bottle – Stay hydrated, help the planet.

4. Sand-Free Beach Blanket – Perfect for spontaneous island picnics.

5. RFID-Blocking Wallet – Protect your cards in crowded markets.

Remember: Pack light, pack smart, and leave room for those comfy Thai elephant pants you’ll definitely pick up at a night market!

BEST PLACES TO VISIT IN THAILAND

Thailand is one of those countries you just have to experience—and once you do, good luck not wanting to come back. This place has everything. Whether you’re after a chill, coconut-in-hand beach getaway or an all-out adventure where you’re ziplining through jungles and getting daily massages (because why not?), Thailand delivers. To make sure you don’t miss out, I’ve put together a list of must-visit spots that you absolutely need on your itinerary—because trust me, FOMO is real when it comes to this country.

1. Bangkok

Get lost in the sauce! This busy tropical metropolis is at the centre of all the action. It’s the wildest place on earth…or Asia in my opinion! Just take a deep breath, you got this!

Most travellers typically land in Bangkok and spend a few days here, but others tend to go straight to the islands. Those who skip out on Bangkok usually end end regretting, so don’t let that be you.

Bangkok is full of hidden gems waiting to be discovered. Make sure to check out the famous Chatuchak weekend market if you can, this place will blow your mind. (it’s basically a giant flea market) but with exotic animals for sale etc…

Last but not least, make to go eat your heart out at the night markets in Bangkok.

Fair warning…Bangkok might steal your heart, and before you know it, you’ll be searching for a condo and calling it home. And while you’re in Bangkok, why not get a Sak Yant Tattoo…

Husky Cafe in Bangkok

TrueLove @ Neverland (Husky Cafe)

In Bangkok you will find loads of cafes, this one is one of my favourites. I mean how could you not love coffee and puppies.

Getting around Bangkok

Navigating this city, can be quite overwhelming your first time around, so I highly recommend taking a tour of the city on your first day.

Here’s a few of my personal favourite tours. Maeklong Railway Market , after why not hop on a Tuk Tuk and go for a ride around town and to top off the night why not do The Chao Phraya Dinner Cruise.

Explore Northern Thailand

After exploring the islands & Bangkok, make your way to Chiang Mai to breathe in the fresh mountain air and dive into outdoor adventures like white-water rafting, trekking, mountain biking, and visiting remote hill-tribe villages.

While up North, consider renting a scooter and doing the Mae Hong Son Loop which is one of the coolest things to do in Northern Thailand. Thew views…are unreal!

From exploring the stunning temples, eating Khao Soi and chilling out in Pai, here are some of my favorite things to do in Northern Thailand:

Avoid Northern Thailand during Burning Season for a more comfortable and pleasant experience, as the air quality can be poor and the environment smoky.

2. Pai

Tucked away in the mountains near the Myanmar border, Pai is a tiny hippie-meets-vegan paradise that will absolutely steal your heart—but first, it will test your stomach. Getting there is no joke. The drive is 144 km of pure motion sickness, featuring 762 winding turns that will have you questioning every life choice that led to this moment. Pro tip: Pack some Gravol and prepare for the possibility of an impromptu bus-wide puke fest (because yes, it happens).

But don’t let that scare you off—Pai is 100% worth the ride there is so many things to do in Pai. Once you arrive, you’ll find yourself surrounded by stunning landscapes, chill vibes, and some of the best bougie street food in Thailand. There’s no rush here, so stay a few days (or a week, you won’t regret it) and soak it all in. While you’re at it, rent a scooter—Pai is the perfect place to learn, and trust me, it beats walking after one too many mango sticky rice feasts.

3. Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai might not be Thailand’s biggest city, but don’t let that fool you—this place delivers. It’s basically the ex-pat capital of Thailand, and for good reason. Making it easy to form a community.

The food scene is insane, the vibe is effortlessly chill, and the mix of travelers, digital nomads, and adventure junkies just keeps growing. With a population of around 127,000, it’s a cultural hotspot where you can sip fresh coconut at a street market by day and dive into deep convos at a trendy café by night.

And if you time it right, you’ll get to witness Yi Peng, one of the coolest lantern festivals in the world, where thousands of glowing lanterns light up the night sky. Whether you’re here for the temples, the food, or just the energy, Chiang Mai is a must-visit

4. Chiang Rai

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Ut elit tellus, luctus nec ullamcorper mattis, pulvinar dapibus leo.

So you’re looking for the ultimate Thailand travel guide…Known as the land of smiles, Thailand has it all, from beautiful white beaches, incredibly diverse street food, stunning temples, and a very strong culture that is impossible to resist

Whether you’ve come to Thailand for an adventure or simply get cheap massages, I can guarantee you that once you finish this Thailand travel guide, you will want to pack up and go.

This country has easily become my favorite in Southeast Asia. As a result of spending quite some time there, I put together this Thailand travel guide of things to do and avoid during your travels.

Go Island Hopping in the Islands

Once you got your dose of Northern Thailand, it’s time to board a plane and head south! In this section I’ll give you my best Thailand travel tips, so you ca navigate these islands like a pro.

As you may of heard, Southern Thailand is paradise. With beautiful beaches everywhere you look it’s hard to decide where to go first.

Depending if you want to party hard or relax like a king, you have a few options…

For an epic party scene, make your way to Phi Phi or Koh Phangan. If you’re looking to unwind in paradise, I recommend Koh Samui, Koh Lipe, and Koh Tao for a more relaxed vibe.

Just note that most of these islands are extreme tourist spots, meaning you might be disappointed with what you see. (ex: McDonalds)

5. Koh Tao

Koh Tao is an absolute paradise in the Gulf of Thailand, known for its crystal-clear waters, stunning beaches, and vibrant marine life. If you’re into water sports, it’s a dream come true—perfect for scuba diving, snorkeling, paddleboarding, or kayaking.

But there’s more to Koh Tao than just its underwater beauty. The island is packed with lush jungle trails, gorgeous waterfalls, and epic viewpoints, making it a playground for adventurers and nature lovers alike. Even though it’s getting more popular, Koh Tao still keeps that chill, bohemian vibe, blending jaw-dropping landscapes with the warmest local culture. Whether you’re after some action or just want to kick back, Koh Tao is definitely a must-see on your Thailand island-hopping journey!

It’s the ideal mix of chill vibes and adventure—perfect for anyone who loves the beach and wants to explore.

Even though it’s becoming more popular, Koh Lipe still keeps that laid-back charm. Spend your days snorkeling with tropical fish, kayaking in calm bays, or just soaking up the sun on almost-empty beaches. When night falls, the island comes to life with cozy beach bars and fresh seafood sizzling under the stars.

If you’re looking for that perfect tropical escape—where relaxation and adventure come together without the crowds—Koh Lipe is the dream spot that truly checks all the boxes!

At just 100 baht per hour, it’s the perfect affordable adventure for an afternoon of exploring. Grab a kayak, glide through the crystal-clear waters, and let the island’s marine life amaze you!

8. Koh Samui

Nestled in the Gulf of Thailand, Koh Samui is one of the country’s top island escapes. With its palm-lined beaches, crystal-clear waters, and lush jungles, it’s the perfect place to unwind and leave the city stress behind.

What really makes Koh Samui stand out is its versatility. For those looking to relax, there are luxury resorts and world-class spas. If you’re more of an adventurer, you can kayak through hidden lagoons, trek to stunning waterfalls, or check out ancient temples. And the food? From fresh seafood on the beach to bustling Thai street markets, your taste buds are in for a treat!

As Thailand’s second-largest island, Samui offers endless options—whether you’re planning a romantic getaway, a family vacation, or a solo adventure, this paradise has something for everyone and unforgettable moments around every corner.

Big Buddha Temple (Wat Phra Yai)

Big Buddha Temple (Wat Phra Yai) is a must-see when you’re in Koh Samui. This towering 12-meter Buddha statue stands proudly on a hilltop, offering stunning panoramic views of the island. Whether you’re there to admire the architecture, snap some awesome photos, or just soak in the peaceful vibes, it’s a spot that mixes culture and natural beauty perfectly. Don’t forget to check out the smaller statues and shrines surrounding the temple for some extra zen!

See the Hin Ta and Hin Yai Rocks

If you’re in Koh Samui, you’ve got to check out the Hin Ta and Hin Yai Rocks! These iconic rock formations are famous for their… let’s say, unique shapes. Locals have a fun legend behind them, and they make for a quirky photo op. Whether you’re admiring the natural beauty or just getting a good laugh, these rocks are a must-see on your island adventure! Rock on, folks!

9. Koh Phangan

Floating in the Gulf of Thailand, Koh Phangan is a tropical paradise that perfectly balances wild party vibes with serene natural beauty. Sure, it’s world-famous for its epic Full Moon Parties, but by day, this island shows off a completely different side—think wellness retreats, hidden waterfalls, and spiritual escapes.

Beyond the legendary beach raves, here’s what Koh Phangan has to offer:

• Pristine bays perfect for snorkeling among vibrant coral reefs

• Jungle trails leading to jaw-dropping viewpoints and secret waterfalls

• A booming wellness scene with yoga retreats and detox centers

• Charming temples and traditional villages where you can dive into authentic Thai culture

By day, you can meditate at a hilltop temple or kayak through crystal-clear waters. When the sun sets, let loose barefoot on the beach or unwind with a soothing moonlit massage. Koh Phangan’s magic is that it can be whatever you want—whether you’re here for the party, to find peace, or to soak in local culture.

This island isn’t just a vacation—it’s a life-changing experience that sticks with you long after the tan fades.

Ang Thong National Marine Park

Ang Thong National Marine Park is an absolute gem! This stunning archipelago, made up of 42 islands, is a paradise for adventurers and nature lovers. Picture kayaking through crystal-clear waters, hiking up to jaw-dropping viewpoints, and snorkeling with vibrant marine life. Whether you’re soaking in the views, swimming in hidden lagoons, or just enjoying the tranquility, Ang Thong is the perfect place to disconnect and get lost in nature. Trust me, this is one spot you won’t want to miss during your Thailand adventure!

The Challenge Phangan

If you’re up for some serious fun and adrenaline, The Challenge Phangan is the place to be! This epic obstacle course in Koh Phangan is like stepping into your own personal reality show, with mud pits, climbing walls, and a bunch of other wild challenges that’ll test your strength, agility, and sense of adventure. It’s perfect for groups of friends or anyone looking to push themselves in a super fun way. Whether you’re in it to compete or just to have a blast, The Challenge is one of those unique experiences you’ll be talking about long after you’ve crossed the finish line.

Thailand Travel Tips: Things to Avoid in Thailand

Thailand street food

MUST-TRY THAI DISHES: WHAT TO EAT IN THAILAND

Thailand has some of the wildest food, let’s be honest! Where else in the world can you have a buffet os cricket, scorpions and tarantulas all at once? So when you’re in Thailand here a few dishes you should consider:

Khao Soi: This is probably one of the best dishes i’ve ever had, it so good I dream about it.

it’s a creamy, spice-packed curry noodle soup is the perfect mix of comfort and adventure. With rich coconut milk and bold flavors that hit just right, every bite is a warm, delicious hug for your taste buds!

Pad Krapow: is one of Thailand’s most beloved street food dishes, featuring stir-fried meat (or tofu) with holy basil, chili, and a savory-sweet sauce. It’s quick, flavorful, and often served with a fried egg on top

Coconut Ice Cream: This is one of Thailand’s most refreshing and iconic desserts, especially popular in street markets, beaches, and tourist hotspots. Pro tip: Top it off with loads of peanuts!

Mango Sticky Rice: is Thailand’s most famous and beloved dessert, especially during mango season (March–June). This heavenly combo pairs sweet, ripe mango with creamy coconut-infused sticky rice for the perfect balance of flavors and textures.

Food Courts in Thailand

Whatever you do, don’t sleep on the food courts in Thailand. I know, I know—“food court” sounds like a sad tray of soggy fries at a mall back home, but trust me, this is a whole different game. These spots are goldmines for insanely good (and cheap) street food without having to dodge motorbikes or sweat through your shirt in a market. You’ll find everything from perfect pad kra pao to fresh mango sticky rice, all at prices that make you question why you ever paid $15 for a mediocre takeout back home. Pro tip: Most food courts run on a prepaid card system, so load it up, feast like a king, and then get your unused cash back at the end. Top help you out I put together a list of the best Food Courts in Bangkok.

Thai Scams to watch out for

Thailand is an absolute paradise—but let’s be real, it’s also home to some next-level scam artists. And trust me, these guys aren’t amateurs; they’ve been perfecting their craft longer than you’ve been planning this trip. There’s a scam for literally everything—taxis, temples, tuk-tuks, you name it. That’s why having a translator  (or a good dose of skepticism) can save you from some serious headaches.

To keep you one step ahead, I’ve put together a list of the top scams in Thailand that travelers fall for way too often. Read it, remember it, and don’t let some smooth talker convince you that the Grand Palace is “closed for a special holiday.”

And if you ever find yourself in a situation that feels off, don’t panic—just reach out to the Thailand Tourist Police. They’re there to help, and unlike that “friendly” guy trying to sell you a tuk-tuk tour, they actually have your best interests in mind. Stay sharp and happy travels!

Ladyboy at a club in Thailand

The Ladyboy culture

Ladyboys, or Kathoeys, are a big part of Thailand’s cultural landscape, and unlike in many other countries, they’re widely accepted. Thanks to Buddhist philosophy, which focuses more on the soul than the body, transitioning from male to female isn’t seen as a huge deal—it’s just a natural part of life. Over time, Kathoeys have become almost iconic, drawing curiosity from travelers worldwide. But beyond the glitz of cabaret shows and the stereotypes, they’re just people living their truth. If you get the chance, strike up a conversation—you’ll find many are hilarious, confident, and full of personality.
