Knowing that Australia is well over 15000km in circumference, it can take you quite a while to see the entire country as there is just so much ground to cover and so little time, so all depending on where you want to go and how much time you have, there’s an option for you. For example, Sydney to Cairns could take you up to 4 days alone.

Throw in a few stops along the way, make it 2-3 weeks as there is so much to see. For anyone wanting to see Australia, I recommend going for 3-6 months, there’s just so much to see while traveling around Australia. It’s truly a backpacker’s paradise.

So what is the best way to travel around Australia? Here are a few ways no matter how long you’re staying.

Best bus pass for traveling around Australia

Australia is filled with beauty just waiting to be explored and one of my favorite ways to see Australia is with its hop-on and hop-off busses such as the Stray Bus Tours. Why? Because it gives you the flexibility to travel at your own pace which is great for solo travelers as you never know if you will end up staying two days or maybe even a week at the next stop.

These modern buses come fully equipped with AC, reclining seats, and Wifi, so just know that you will be very comfortable for your entire trip.

This is also a great way to meet other travelers who are heading in your direction.

Traveling around Australia by camper van

Traveling around Australia in a camper van is an incredible experience and by far the best vehicle to travel around Australia with, which I highly recommend to anyone.

So if you’re looking for a travel experience which you cannot get anywhere else… Look no further than renting a camper van, these hippy mobiles will take you to places no tour bus, train, boat or airplane can, but renting a camper van does have its pros and cons.

Here are a few of them.

Traveling around Australia by air

Not my favorite way of traveling around Australia, but definitely the fastest way. If you’re pressed for time, by all means take a plane.

Flying in Australia is very expensive because of the lack of competition. There are only a few domestic airlines that operate such as Jetstar, Virgin, Qantas, but note that you are able to find some great deals if you book in advance.

Jetstar is typically your best option for low coast flights. The prices will vary depending on seasons, so I will not go into details, just have a look for yourself.

Traveling around Australia by car

Renting a car is another great way of traveling around Australia. With its pristine highways and coastline views, renting a car will not disappoint. You will find car rental companies all over, making it very easy to pick up and return your vehicle.

Just note that, in Australia, they drive on the right-hand side of the road, so you might want to take a lesson or two before jumping behind the wheel and make sure to have an international driver’s license as well or you will not be able to rent a vehicle.

If driving a car is not your thing, consider these other options:

As you can see renting or hitching a ride in Australia is also a great way to get around on a budget for any traveler.

My final thoughts on traveling around Australia

As you can see traveling around Australia can be quite the adventure. With so many options at your disposal, sometimes it’s hard to choose! But rest assured that whichever route you choose you will always have someone joining you on your journey.

Never travel without travel insurance!

As a digital nomad I always use SafetyWing, because it covers everything, and it's super affordable. The best part is that you can actually order the insurance if you already left for your trip. You can read my full review here
